Develop Learning
• Enhance student development in key skills such as
communication, literacy, collaboration, creativity,
managing information and thinking.
• “In a majority of EU Member States, more than three
fifths of students in general upper secondary
education were learning two or more foreign
languages in 2019” (Eurostat data, 2021).
Our students’ overall academic development
would be enhanced through greater alignment
with their international peers.
• Students benefit from access to a broad and
balanced curriculum, sustained in part through the
availability of access to modern foreign languages. For
student choice to be maintained, students need to be
encouraged to avail of the range of language options
available.
Develop as a Student and Citizen
• Languages provide a range of opportunities to study, live, work and travel
abroad…broaden student horizons by encouraging uptake of languages!
• Languages play a key role in education for sustainable development, providing quality
and inclusive education for all. They foster personal fulfilment, active citizenship,
intercultural understanding, and social inclusion.
• Support student wellbeing and resilience! Foreign language learning promotes
confidence, encourages creative thinking, and the development of more empathy,
acceptance, awareness of identity and an appreciation for diversity.
• Encouraging the uptake of all available languages helps support the needs of your
heritage language students and promote an inclusive school community.
