The Mitre Players
2024: The Year in Focus
Following on from our fabulous 昀椀vieth year - how could we top that? Well read
on for a quick recap of the year that was 2024 - our 51st year.
The year started whilst most of us were
in post Christmas mode, a dedicated
group of merry mitres had embarked on
crea}ng our entry for the Southern
Coun}es Drama Fes}val - Heavens
Above. This had a two night run at the
clubhouse and the onto the fes}val
where we won 8best adult show9
meaning that we went on to compete at
the Eastern Area Final in May where it
was nominated for best overall show
but sadly lost out by a few marks.
Our next produc}on saw the clubhouse
transformed into an American school
gymnasium for The 25th Annual Putnam
County Spelling Bee, which showcases a group
of quirky children spelling their hearts out. It
played to sold-out houses and was fun for all
involved as well as a very apprecia}ve
audience.
We then moved onto the big monster
of a show - Young Frankenstein. As a
large musical produc}on as well as a
tour, this involves the exper}se of so
many on stage and o昀昀 and the skill of
everyone involved created a show
that was epic - incredible set, band,
pyrotechnics, costumes etc., I could
go on.
The Croydon run, outdoors at
Croydon High School escaped the epic rainfall we saw in July (one of the risks of
Bri}sh summer}me) and then we moved on to the world famous Minack Theatre
in Cornwall.
Ge琀ng the enormous set down and up the cli昀昀 face really bonded the touring
party and again we were lucky to play to full houses and the se琀ng is perfect. It
was all worth the stairs for the wonderful experience and fabulous feedback,
with the cherry on top
that in September it was
announced that we had
won the prized Minack
trophy (best produc}on
of the season) - a huge
accolade especially as this
was against professional
and amateur companies
and lovely in having
recogni}on of the MItres
as a leading theatre
company.
