A DEPUTY
FIELD TRAINING
New deputies work with Field Training Officers (FTOs) during
the Field Training and Evaluation Program (FTEP) until they have
successfully completed all phases of training. The new-employee
probationary period is 18 months.
ONGOING TRAINING
Deputies continue to refine their skills for the rest of their careers, including:
• Ongoing study of case-law and policy updates
• Annual proficiency re-qualification in firearms
• Firearms and defensive tactics

Entry-level Recruit Patrol Deputies are required to complete
16 weeks of training at the Department of Public Safety
Standards and Training (DPSST) academy.

Standards and Training (DPSST) academy.
