Teaching Activity
Teacher Notes
To end the lesson, you might set children the extra
challenge on slide 18, to convert Jack the Black vom
Muehlrad’s time from minutes and seconds to seconds.
Make a note of any
children who you feel
will need to revisit this
lesson and those who
need challenging
further.
If time allows, you could finish by watching the video of
another hero – Arrow the German shepherd on slide 19.

Assessment opportunities
During the introductory phases and plenary aspects of the lesson, teachers can assess what
children already know and how well they have grasped the activity.
Teachers can conduct formative assessments while children are completing their conversion
activity individually, marking as they see correct answers and pointing out any changes that need
to be made to minimise time spent marking later.
Suggestions for extending learning
Once children are confident with their calculation methods, they could be given larger
conversions to work out.
Children could go on to explore converting hours to minutes, days to hours, weeks to days and
years to months. For example, they could try:
Converting the longest service for a guide dog (14 years 8 months) from years and months
to months.
Converting the longest space flight by a dog (22 days) from days to hours.
Home learning opportunities
Children could explore converting further physical challenges at home, working this out in seconds
then converting into minutes:
How fast can you complete 50 star jumps?
How fast can you complete 30 lunges?
How fast can you complete 30 toe touches?
If less physical challenges suit your cohort better, consider setting challenges such as:
How fast can you write your name 50 times?
How fast can you read a chapter of your book?
How fast can you get undressed and put on your pyjamas at bedtime?
