Workforce:40%MinoritiesUI Health and the entire team werecommitted to maintaining a diverseworkforce on the project, includingrepresentation from the local communityand surrounding wards. A goal of 30%MBE/WBE (minority- and women-businessenterprises ) participation was establishedearly in the project, as well as a goal fora workforce made up of 30% minoritiesand women. Upon completion, the projectallocated 40% of subcontract awards toMBE and WBE and employed a workforcethat has comprised of 40% minorities and5% women. Roughly 6% of our workforcehad been hired from the local andsurrounding neighborhood.When seeking participation, the teamensured that our bidder list included anappropriate mix of minority and majorityfirms. Final selections considered diversity– including partnerships between minorityand majority firms – as a factor.Outreach to community organizationshelped to ensure that local residents had achance to contribute to economic growthin their neighborhood and also helpedus to reach more minority firms, as wellas individuals looking for a chance to getinvolved. We also looked for opportunitiesfor smaller firms to partner with largerteams and included this as a criteria forparticipation.5%Women6%Local HiresFeedback on the effort was positive andcreated a ripple effect. A minority firmwent on to create an ongoing relationshipwith a majority that has allowed them tobid more jobs together.
