Workforce:
40%
Minorities
UI Health and the entire team were
committed to maintaining a diverse
workforce on the project, including
representation from the local community
and surrounding wards. A goal of 30%
MBE/WBE (minority- and women-business
enterprises ) participation was established
early in the project, as well as a goal for
a workforce made up of 30% minorities
and women. Upon completion, the project
allocated 40% of subcontract awards to
MBE and WBE and employed a workforce
that has comprised of 40% minorities and
5% women. Roughly 6% of our workforce
had been hired from the local and
surrounding neighborhood.
When seeking participation, the team
ensured that our bidder list included an
appropriate mix of minority and majority
firms. Final selections considered diversity
– including partnerships between minority
and majority firms – as a factor.
Outreach to community organizations
helped to ensure that local residents had a
chance to contribute to economic growth
in their neighborhood and also helped
us to reach more minority firms, as well
as individuals looking for a chance to get
involved. We also looked for opportunities
for smaller firms to partner with larger
teams and included this as a criteria for
participation.

Feedback on the effort was positive and
created a ripple effect. A minority firm
went on to create an ongoing relationship
with a majority that has allowed them to
bid more jobs together. This type of result
has a lasting DE&I impact on our industry,
which is the greater goal.
