New Year Resolutions for your business
Happy New Year! The New Year is a time to reflect and decide on what to change. With that in
mind, how can common New Year’s Resolutions be applied to business?
Lose weight
Like people, businesses can carry too much weight, and can take a number of forms. Review your
overheads to identify costs that can be trimmed. Perhaps you have surplus assets that should be

sold? It could be a unit not delivering any profit – whether a contract, a location or a department
– that needs to be removed. Review your business with a critical eye to see if any weight needs
to be shed.
Spend more time with family and friends
What is the biggest thing that gets in the way of spending time with friends and family? Work, of
course! So how can we work smarter? One way is to review what you spend your time doing and
categorise the tasks. If you spend 20 hours per week doing things that really add value to your
business, these are “Tier 1” tasks. 20 hours spent doing things that are important but don’t really
add value, are “Tier 2”. Ask yourself which Tier 2 tasks could
be delegated, and which could be done quicker by leveraging
technology? Take your time back.
Eat more healthily
The third most common resolution is based on taking a longterm view rather than what feels good in the short term. Take a
similar approach to your business. For investment, expansion,
NPD and recruitment, only put into your business things that
add to its value over the long term, so you are taking actions
that consistently increase the value of your business.
