The University of Maryland’s
formal business curriculum is
newly launched under the
Department of Economics
and Business Administration.
A lot has changed since the University of Maryland adopted its
first formal business curriculum in 1921— including Testudo!
Here’s a look back at some of the significant milestones on our
journey to becoming a world-class business school.

The College of Business
and Public Administration
moves into its new building,
Tydings Hall, named for
Millard E. Tydings, a
longtime U.S. senator
from Maryland.
BPA’s business administration
department becomes the
College of Business and
Management (CBM).
1970
1993

1992
Van Munching
Hall opens and
is dedicated
with a bottle
of Heineken
by Leo Van
Munching
Jr. ’50.
The growing trend toward
globalization leads the school
to establish the Center
for International Business
Education and Research.
1989
1999
Van Munching donates $6M
to expand and renovate Van
Munching Hall, which doubles
the size of the building.
2003
The 18-month Executive
MBA program is launched.
2013
The school’s first online degree
program, the Online MBA,
is launched.
2014
The Ed Snider Center for
Enterprise and Markets
launches with a $5M gift
from the Snider Foundation
and $1M from the Charles
Koch Foundation.
