Y4 Maths Lesson Plan: Dedicated Dogs
Prior learning
Children should be familiar with key vocabulary around time units, using these in their daily lives and
routines.
Some children will already know the conversions for each unit. Most children will be familiar with
conversions for larger units such as weeks and days.
Children should be familiar with methods of addition needed to work out the conversions, though some
may need support in carrying out these calculations.

5 mins
Quick quiz
Using the Lesson Presentation, introduce the quick quiz
to engage pupils. They will guess what the dog world
records are, standing up for answer A or sitting down for
answer B.
Go on to explain to the pupils that in this lesson they will
be exploring time measurements and how to convert
minutes to seconds.
Measuring time
Ask children to think about the ways we measure time.
Ask them to work in pairs to think of three ways to
measure time.
10 mins
Bring pairs back to the class and scribe a list of different
methods of measuring time.
Ask the pupils to think of the best ways to use
measurements of time. Share each activity and ask
children to write down on their individual whiteboards
what the best way to measure this would be, then show
their answer to the front.
5 mins
Using a stopwatch
Hand out a stopwatch to each pair of children and show
them how to use the stopwatches if this is something
they haven’t done before.

Adjust the physical
movements for the
whole class if any
children have a disability
that means being
physical isn’t possible
(e.g., clap if you think A
and click if think B).
Depending on your
cohort, you might like to
utilise mixed-ability pairs
or same-ability pairs.
Some children may
benefit from an adult
supporting paired work.
You could ask the pupils
to time you walking once
around the classroom as
a way to practise using
the stopwatches.
