We opened a
program in Maui–
and then stayed to
lend support.
Grieving children and families
in island and rural communities
often have very limited options
for grief support. So this past
July, we partnered with the Four
Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea
and brought four days of camp
to grieving kids from Hawaii.
We worked with the Hawaiian
organization, Nˉa Keiki O Emalia, to
learn what cultural traditions and
22
rituals would be most meaningful
to the campers. One of the most
extraordinary moments occurred
during a ritual “paddle out” on
the ocean when a helicopter
dropped thousands of flowers
— collected and donated by
the local Maui community —
in a shower of blossoms.
We were heartbroken to witness
the wildfires that occurred right
after we finished camp, and several
of our staff members stayed on
to lend support. We look forward
to returning to this beautiful and
resilient community next summer.
