Nia Tero - 2021 Annual Report - Report - Page 21
We are supporting peoples in northern Brazil, south Suriname,
western Guyana, eastern Colombia, and the Ecuador/Peru
border region. Our regional Indigenous advisors are guiding
us in this process.
Suriname (VIDS). Another important
landmark on this front is related to
multiple achievements of the Indigenous
lawyers of the Articulation of Brazilian
Indigenous Peoples (APIB), who during
2021 won several cases including a
decision of the Supreme Court to ban
missionaries from Indigenous lands with
peoples in voluntary isolation, as well as
depositions for the Supreme Court to
reject the Marco Temporal thesis.
In addition, we focused on the implementation of Nia Tero’s organizational
strengthening strategy. This included
providing support to Indigenous
organizations in assessing their current
situation, identifying their strengthening
priorities, and advancing their
organization's strengthening plan. We
also launched the second round of our
Leadership Fellows Program in the
Amazon, as well as the Policy Trainees
Program. Both programs are for
Indigenous participants from our
key geographies.
Finally, recognizing the threats to
Indigenous peoples in the region, we
continued supporting rapid response
funds for Indigenous peoples in
Colombia and Peru who are under
threat. These funds actively respond to
community and organizational urgent
security needs.
