Y4 English Lesson Plan: Dramatic Diaries
Timing
Teaching activity
Teacher notes
Point out that the _cian word ending is used when
spelling words that are jobs people do and ask children
to try spelling the words politician and beautician.
Next, explain that the _sion word ending sounds
different, as it makes a harder sound (the /ʒ/ sound). This
is only the case when it follows a vowel sound and not
when it follows a consonant (as in the words 8mansion9 or
8tension9, for example). Ask pupils to spell the words
invasion and explosion.
Point out that the _ssion word ending only ever follows a
short vowel sound (/æ/, /ɛ/, /ɪ/, /ɒ/ and /ʌ/). Ask pupils to
spell the words impression and admission.
For further practise of the _tion word ending, ask
children to try spelling the following words by breaking
them down into their four syllables: presentation,
activation, contradiction and explanation.
Writing:
Use inverted commas and other punctuation to
indicate direct speech
Use past, present and future tenses
Discuss writing similar to that which they are planning
to write in order to understand and learn from its
structure, vocabulary and grammar
Non-statutory: Learn the conventions of different
types of writing (for example, a diary written in the
first person)
20 mins
Use the Lesson Presentation to explore what a diary
entry looks like and what you9ll be looking for specifically
in their diary entries.
Show the (fictional) diary entry by Usain Bolt on slide 5
and read through it as a class. Ask the pupils to discuss in
their groups which features they see. Annotate the
extract on the slide with the features children identify.
Some children may
benefit from the
discussion being guided
by an adult.
Handouts of Usain’s
Diary Entry can be given
to the pupils for them to
discuss in their groups.
They may wish to
highlight features they
have found.
Next, ask children to focus on the tenses used. Ask them
to find examples of past, present, and future and
highlight them on the slide.
