UCLA RADIATION ONCOLOGY JOURNAL
JOHN CHARTERS, PHD
Dr. John Charters was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest—Lake Oswego,
Oregon, and later Woodinville, Washington. Dr. Charters graduated from the
University of Notre Dame with bachelor’s degrees in physics and mathematics. He
then received a master’s degree in theoretical physics from UCLA, followed by a
PhD in Medical Physics through the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.
While a PhD student, Dr. Charters studied a wide variety of radiation oncology
physics topics, including respiratory gating dosimetry on ViewRay, stereoscopic
radiographs for ExacTrac IGRT, and respiratory motion modeling. His doctoral
research projects focused on developing artificial intelligence models to detect
vertebral-body misalignments and automated methods to evaluate prostate cancer
treatment plans. Dr. Charters is passionate about applying his mathematical and
data science skills toward improving radiation oncology workflows and the quality
of cancer care.
DISHANE LUXIMON, PHD
Dr. Dishane Luximon grew up on the island of Mauritius. He moved to the United
States to pursue his bachelor's degree in physics at Connecticut College, where he also
conducted research in astrophysics. In 2019, he joined the prestigious Physics & Biology
in Medicine Graduate Program at UCLA, where he earned his PhD under the mentorship
of Dr. James Lamb.
During his doctoral studies, Dr. Luximon specialized in the development and
implementation of advanced AI-based tools designed to enhance the radiation therapy
treatment planning process and improve patient safety. His PhD dissertation focused
on creating a deep learning-based patient setup error detection system, aimed at
consolidating the safety of CBCT-guided radiotherapy.
Dr. Luximon is actively involved in Global Health initiatives as a member of the Global
Needs and Assessment Committee of the AAPM. With a strong connection to his roots,
Dr. Luximon is particularly interested in advancing Global Health aims to ensure more
equitable access to high-quality cancer care on a global scale by utilizing his medical
physics and AI expertise.
