TRB PRESENTS: EQUITY IN ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION
THE PRESENCE OF CONNECTED
TRANSPORTATION NETWORKS IS
ESSENTIAL FOR THOSE WHO CYCLE,
WALK, USE MICROMOBILITY DEVICES, OR
USE WHEELCHAIRS TO ACCESS PUBLIC
TRANSPORTATION. YET MANY
AMERICANS, WHEN TRYING TO ACCESS
PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION, ENCOUNTER
BARRIERS SUCH AS NO SIDEWALKS,
SIDEWALKS WITH UNEVEN SURFACES,
ROADS WITHOUT SAFE SHOULDERS, AND
LACK OF SAFE OPTIONS TO CROSS THE
ROAD. IN THIS SESSION, PANELISTS WILL
DISCUSS THE IMPORTANCE OF A ROBUST
ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION
INFRASTRUCTURE TO ENABLE SAFE,
AFFORDABLE, AND EQUITABLE ACCESS TO
PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION AND TO
REALIZE SOCIETAL BENEFITS LIKE
REDUCTION OF CO2 EMISSIONS AND
IMPROVED HEALTH. IN ADDITION,
PANELISTS WILL PROVIDE EXAMPLES
FROM THEIR WORK THAT HAVE YIELDED
RESULTS AND THUS IMPROVED PUBLIC
TRANSPORTATION ACCESS FOR THOSE
ACROSS THE SPECTRUM OF DIVERSITY
CHARACTERISTICS INCLUDING AGE,
INCOME, ABILITY, GENDER, AND
RACE/ETHNICITY.
