per cent of this year’s B.C. winners enjoyed
double-digit growth in full-time
employees compared to roughly 14 per
cent nationally. He theorizes that one of
the province’s advantages is its beautiful
natural backdrop to the work
environment.
“For generations, young people have
sought to go West for many reasons,” he
says of B.C. “Today, along with its
enduring natural beauty, the province
offers a very stable employment picture.
When you look at B.C. compared to other
regions, you find a unique diversity of
employment options that exist only there,
from shipping to port operations,
government employers and a robust
representation of high-tech.”
One example of the latter is first-time
BC Top Employers winner Boomi
Solutions Canada, a pioneer of
cloud-based integration platforms that
enable businesses to discover, manage and
orchestrate data while connecting
applications, processes and people.
Francesca Molinari, chief people officer
at Boomi, says the company has grown in
Vancouver from zero employees to nearly
250 in just 18 months. She credits the
creation of a workplace where people feel
valued, supported and inspired to make an
impact.
“With a wide variety of career paths and
opportunities for vertical, horizontal and
geographic advancement, we ensure our
team members thrive within our global
organization,” Molinari says. “As our
platform continues to innovate, we
promote continuous learning.”
Unusually generous perks distinguish
Boomi from the competition.
“This year, two employees won their
choice of a Porsche or a Mustang,
showcasing our commitment to rewarding
those who drive our AI-driven success,”
Molinari says. This is in addition to a
range of wellness initiatives, a hybrid work
schedule and an array of benefits to meet
individual needs.
Despite BC Hydro earning the Top
Employer status for more than a decade,
Carolynn Ryan, senior vice-president of
people and chief human resources officer,
says this year’s win “is extremely important
in this competitive market. People know
the Top Employer logo; they look for it.”
BC Hydro’s focus has always been to
nurture its talent, and an advantage of
being a large organization with 7,500
employees is that its workforce can explore
different careers within the same
company.
“We have our own technical trades
school and affiliations with other schools
to help them achieve that,” Ryan explains.
Another Top Employer, Fresh Prep
Foods, is enjoying double-digit full-time
staff growth as a convenient and
sustainable meal delivery service.
“The Top Employers status helps us
attract talent and builds on the sense of
pride shared by our existing employees,”
says Ashley Harrison, vice-president of
people and culture.
Fostering empowerment is key to Fresh
Prep’s success as a Top Employer.
“Candid and transparent
communication is vital, and everyone in
our company feels free to give us feedback
on all issues and developments,” Harrison
says.
In a similar vein, Stacey Emerson,
vice-president of corporate services at
Century Group Lands Corp., says while
perks and benefits are important in
attracting new employees and keeping
them happy, the real recipe for employee
retention and satisfaction is adhering to
simple values. “We get good people, treat
them with respect and decency, and listen
to their ideas,” she says.
Emerson goes on to note that her
company’s roots go back to 1957 in
Tsawwassen, and that a focus on
community diversity and equity have
always been part of Century’s driving
values.
“People respond strongly to our values
because they know we’re sincere and have
a great track record of inspiring loyalty,”
she says.
As for winning again as a Top Employer,
Emerson adds, “It means a lot because the
Top Employers competition is an excellent
benchmark in a rapidly changing market.
It reinforces that we continue to grow in
the right direction.”
