STEP 6: SET MISSION AND GOALS
The mission and goals should be established in collaboration with all ERG
members and be linked to specific business goals. Together, they should
communicate both the organization and the group’s core values and common
interest.
While the mission defines the overarching purpose for which the group was
established, the goals should clearly articulate specific activities and timelines.
The following questions should be addressed when setting the mission and
goals:
What are the core values of the group?
How is this group different from other groups in the company?
What steps need to be taken to achieve the group’s mission?
What are the short and long term goals?
What resources are needed for each goal?
Who will take the lead in the implementation of each goal?
What are reasonable and achievable timelines?
Activity: Establishing a Mission and Setting SMART Goals for Your ERG
This activity will guide ERG members through using a SWOT Analysis and SMART
Goals to create a mission and actionable goals aligned with both the ERG’s
purpose and the organization’s objectives.
Part 1: SWOT Analysis for Defining Mission
1. Identify and discuss:
Strengths: What strengths do members and allies bring to this ERG?
How can these strengths support the company’s goals?
Weaknesses: What challenges does the ERG face within the
organization? Are there areas where support or additional resources
are needed?
Opportunities: What external or internal opportunities exist for the ERG
(e.g., professional development, visibility, partnerships)?
Threats: Are there any barriers or risks that could impact the ERG’s
success?
2. Summarize findings:
Write a brief summary of each SWOT category to help define the ERG’s
mission and identify areas where the ERG can make a positive impact.
Use the strengths and opportunities to shape the ERG’s mission
statement and its unique purpose within the company.
