Jacques then asked around the
table about sustainability and green
credentials including the utilisation of
second-hand parts to repair damaged
vehicles. The use of second-hand parts
has often been considered and there
have been insurers who have had the
use of second-hand parts a condition
written into their policies. However, I
advised that as far as I am aware, the
schemes have not been as successful
as was hoped. I also suggested that
there may be a balance to be struck
between repairing older vehicles,
possibly with second-hand parts rather
than treating then as total losses, and
treating vehicles as total losses which
results in them being replaced with
more modern and cleaner vehicles.
26 January
Jacques asked what directives, if any,
were being applied in the member
countries for reducing emissions in
the profession. The general view was
that there was almost no directive for
experts from governments or within
the profession. I advised that I believed
that our profession appeared to be
too small to be of any signi昀椀cant
concern. I explained that about 90%
of inspections in the UK were now
being carried out remotely, which gave
savings by reducing traveling and time.
There was, however, signi昀椀cant concern
amongst some IAEA members that
this was impacting very signi昀椀cantly by
contributing to substantial increases
in repair costs, due to the limitations
of assessing damage from images.
I explained that the electri昀椀cation
of cars is causing problems due
to the inadequate number of
charging stations and the increased
cost of electricity. Also, that some
commentators have stated that vehicle
electri昀椀cation is the biggest mistake
ever, made by the motor industry.
Classic cars are now in more demand,
because they are exempt from tolls in
low emissions zones in major cities.
I advised that the South Wales steel
blast furnaces are to be closed and that
the UK will need to import steel from
countries on the other side of the world
in future, such as China and India.
There was then a presentation from
BCA Expertise of France, which
employs 1,500 staff including 650
automotive experts. They have
dedicated two IT experts to develop
an AI programme for automotive
engineers/experts in Europe. The
system relies upon an enormous
amount of data from previous collision
damage assessments. Images supplied
by the claimants are analysed by the
system, which determines what parts
can be repaired and which need to be
replaced. It then calculates the cost of
repairs, pre-incident value, and salvage
valuation. It does not assess 昀椀re
and 昀氀ood damage, and the collision
damage assessment would still need to
be appraised by a quali昀椀ed engineer.
It is basically a triage system. I asked
if the AI assessments were compared
to physical assessment, carried by
experts, and told that they were and
that the expert repair assessment cost
was 5% less than AI.
Julien Jouvrot of France advised that
experts should embrace AI because it
will make a useful tool for them to use
for dealing with minor damage claims.
In France, companies employing
more than 500 people are obligated
by the government to reduce their
carbon footprint using specialist expert
support.
