Golf Society Magazine Report
December 2024
Another thoroughly enjoyable golf
year, this }me under Captain Nick
Woodman9s careful guidance. We
managed four out of the 昀椀ve golf days
– unfortunately, the heavens opened
just as we all arrived at East Sussex
Na}onal and the course became a
series of newly formed lakes.
However, we managed to complete
all of the other days despite the
weather trying its hardest to dampen
our spirits.
The Society always throws up fun and
keenly contested events and this year
was no excep}on. We had four
di昀昀erent winners of our golf days and
so many other winners of Nearest the
Pins, Longest Drive and Straightest
Drive Comps. Top marks though goes
to Marcus Asco琀琀, as winner of the
Captain9s Revenge – a 8simple9
downhill pu琀ng compe}}on at
Sweetwoods. We all had three
chances to end up nearest the hole,
so everyone had a go, all 28 of us and
boom! - straight in the hole for Mr.
Asco琀琀, the only one to do so.
In other events, we held the 昀椀rst
Senior Seniors Event at Godstone
followed by Pie and Pints at the
Barley Mow, Tandridge – a scorching
hot avernoon, so thankfully only nine
holes of golf but some very refreshing
ales consumed and plenty of chat
averwards. This was a new event that
we will de昀椀nitely repeat in 2025.
We regained the Harrods Pu琀琀er from
the Old Whitgivian Golf Society in our
annual match, although from the
great social interac}on and
discussions aver, it my be that we
decide to forget the simple matchplay format and do something
di昀昀erent in the future?

The Tour down to Sandford Springs in
Hampshire had all sorts of setbacks
and hiccups along the way and, in the
end; the weather decided that it
would curtail our golf. However, we
were happy to congratulate Tony
Mans昀椀eld as our best tourist.
Many of you will know our President,
Gerry Murphy who has been such a
loyal member of the Society and was
its Secretary for many years (he can9t
keep away from wri}ng up accounts
of sports matches can he?) and Gerry
added his humour, an}cs and great
sense of fun to our golf day
presenta}ons – we may need to buy
him a man-bag though, so he doesn9t
keep losing his phone or keys or
glasses or all three!
Captain, Nick Woodman can now sit
back and relax, handing over the
baton to Captain Elect, Andy Hunt.
Another alum of the school who has
already worked extremely hard to
nego}ate and con昀椀rm some amazing
venues for our 2025 golf days,
including E昀케ngham; Wrotham Heath;
Li琀琀lehampton; Banstead Downs and
昀椀nally, the beau}ful West Hill.
If ever there was a good }me to join
the Society it is NOW. Annual Sub is
only £22.50 and our 昀椀rst event is April
3rd at E昀케ngham GC. Contact Laurie
King at: lk07@me.com or visit:

Come and join in the fun and social
golf – all are welcome and even if you
can only play one or two of the golf
days we have lined up, it would be
great to see you.
