The FIEA Board Meeting took place in January in Barcelona and included presentations on AI by Lisa Corbat
and Laurène Laynat from BCA Expertise and insights from the FIEA President, Jacques Trassoudaine.
FIEA BOARD MEETING
TH
TH
BARCELONA, 25 -26
JANUARY 2024
By Alan Watling, IAEA Representative to the FIEA.
he 昀椀rst part of the
meeting started at
2pm with about 14
attendees with a
welcome from the
President, Jacques Trassoudaine
T
Jacques advised that the FIEA had
a credit balance in the bank of
€52,000 and that the budget for
2024 is €75,000, which is before the
subscriptions for 2024 due to be
collected.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic,
SIDEXA used to sponsor the FIEA with
a donation of €35,000 per year but
this was reduced to €10,000. Jacques
hoped that this might be increased this
year.
He explained that the Board meeting
has returned to Barcelona because
Marseille and Paris were considered
to be too expensive. He went on
to explain that the FIEA Executive
has decided to change delegates
claimable expenses. Previously, one
institute/association delegate could
claim for one overnight hotel stay and
the evening dinner. From 2024 this
is to change to a one-off payment of
€150, with the excess being paid by
the delegates or their organisation.

For the annual combined Board
meeting, Technical Day and AGM,
there would be a 昀椀xed amount of
€300 for one delegate from each
organisation. This announcement was
met with considerable concern by
some delegates, because they have
to pay their own expenses, personally.
I pointed out that delegates, such as
me, representing over 800 members
of the IAEA, and DEKRA, that the
cost was easier to absorb, but smaller
organisations such as CAAEA of Cyprus
with about 40 members and Turkey
with about 100 members, the cost was
prohibitive and may not be sustainable.
Currently, it was estimated that the
additional cost for individuals to attend
Board meetings for travel etc, was in
the order of €250/300, and often more.
Therefore, this new cap would only add
to that cost. I said that I considered
that those delegates funding their own
attendance should be applauded for
their commitment and dedication to
the FIEA and their members. Jacques
indicated that the Executive may be
able to revisit the expenses criteria
to assist and support the smaller
organisations.
Christos Koligliatis of Greece who, at
our previous meeting in Mons (see
page 20 for Alan’s Report on this
meeting) offered to assist hosting
the 2024 FIEA General Assembly in
Greece, proposed that the event could
be held in either Athens or Nafplio
in October. Athens had the bene昀椀t
of a classic car museum venue, as
well as being a historic city with an
international airport. However, it was
decided that Athens would be too
expensive and Nafplio, although two
hours’ drive from Athens, is also a very
beautiful ancient city and would cost
about half the price of the 2023 GA in
Mons. Transport from Athens Airport
could easily be arranged for attendees.
Concern was expressed about
non-members advertising themselves
as being members of the FIEA or
associations/institutes af昀椀liated to
the FIEA. It was explained that there
was nothing which could be done to
prevent this. I pointed out that this was
deception or fraud and that the UK
had robust legislation in place which
acted as a deterrent. The general
reaction from around the table was
that there was nothing of this sort on
the continent and this practice is likely
continue unabated.
