SUPPORTING LAW ENFORCEMENT:UTILIZING TECHNOLOGY FOR SAFETY AND EFFICIENCYThe Remotely Operated Vehicle Team (ROVT) utilizescutting-edge technology to support law enforcementfunctions. ROVT deputies have employed innovative remotevehicle technology for over a decade to assist in high-risklaw enforcement operations, enhancing officer safety andproviding real-time information for supervisors.ROVT comprises dedicated members from the WashingtonCounty Sheriff’s Office and officers from the Beavertonand Hillsboro Police Departments. Together, these skilledprofessionals respond to various incidents, providing crucialsupport to other specialized teams.ROVT members must obtain and maintain a Federal AviationAdministration (FAA) license to operate drones for policepurposes. Oregon law places certain restrictions on usingdrones for police activities, and our trained drone pilotsdiligently adhere to these regulations.Here are some examples of the invaluable work carried outby ROVT:• Routinely embarks on missions for vehicle crash and crimescene reconstruction, capturing images and videos froman elevated perspective to gather crucial evidence.• Provides aerial support for K9 operations, aiding inapprehending fleeing suspects and ensuring the safety ofdeputies and the community.• ROVT plays a pivotal role in Search and Rescue operations(SAR), swiftly covering vast areas that would bechallenging to navigate otherwise.• Supports our Tactical Negotiations Team (TNT) byoffering vital visual intelligence during critical moments,enhancing officer safety.Training is an essential aspect of the ROVT’s operations. Eachmonth, team members engage in comprehensive trainingsessions to enhance their proficiency in operating variousdrone platforms, each with its distinct purpose. Some dronesare designed to navigate the unpredictable Oregon weatheroutdoors, while others are optimized for indoor flightscenarios.The dedication and expertise of ROVT have proven tobe instrumental in bolstering law enforcement efforts inWashington County.
