Y4 Science Lesson Plan: Terrific Teeth
Timing
Teaching activity
5 mins
Brain break!
Ask pupils to guess the Guinness World Records held by
Leah Shutkever – a speed eater from the UK.
Teacher notes
Bring the pupils back to the group and show them the
teeth diagram on the board.
With input from pupils, point out a particular subset of
teeth on the diagram. Ask pupils what they think each
type of tooth does and what they think it’s called. Work
your way around the whole mouth, and explain each of
the functions:
10 mins
20 mins
Molars and premolars (upper and lower) - for
crushing and grinding.
Incisors (upper and lower) - for biting off and
chewing food up.
Canines (upper and lower) - for ripping up food.
Wisdom teeth - no longer needed, but originally for
very coarse foods. Remember to explain that
children aren’t likely to have these in their mouths
yet, as they come through when we’re older. Some
people don’t get these teeth at all.
Ask children to swap their diagram with another child
and spot if their peer has correctly identified a canine,
molar and incisor.
Ask pupils what they found most interesting about this
lesson and what was most challenging.
Some children may
benefit from preteaching on the key
tooth types, with visual
prompts to support
them.
Some children may
benefit from being
supported by an adult.
Children may benefit
from being in mixedability or similar-ability
pairings.
