Broadcast & Pile Burns
Pile burning is a form of prescribed fire and is an effective way to remove
excess fuels when chipping or masticating and leaving material on site isn’t
feasible.
A broadcast burn is when fire is put
to the ground with low intensity to
consume understory brush and dead,
fallen vegetation. Broadcast burns
require significant site preparation
before burning; thinning vegetation,
piling and burning excess fuels
prior to a broadcast burn being lit.
These actions mitigate the risk of
an unintended high intensity fire,
while removing fuels and providing
ecological benefit.
A broadcast burn is the controlled
application of fire to wildland
fuels in their natural or modified
state over a predefined area,
often conducted to reduce
wildland fire fuel loads, restore
ecological health of an area, or
to clear vegetation.
