Emily’s story
Living
not just
surviving
Emily is a young woman in her early twenties
with a diagnosis of pathological demand
avoidance syndrome, autism and generalised
anxiety disorder, she also has diabetes type 1.
Emily has also been able to
progress her life skills and is
engaging in cleaning, cooking and
laundry tasks she was previously
unable to do.
Emily has a history of physically aggressive and highly disruptive
behaviour that has led to placement breakdowns in the past. Emily took
a long time to get to know her staff team and during that period would
refuse to take her insulin or self-harming by eating foods that made her
unwell. Emily was too anxious to leave her home at all and was unable to
see doctors or nurses so there were a lot of concerns about her wellbeing.
Gradually Emily is
building a fulfilling life,
and she has only had
one minor incident in
over a year.
Over time Emily has built trusting and positive relationships with staff,
she has a wonderful sense of humour and playfulness, and staff really
enjoy working with her. Emily has found new confidence through these
relationships with staff and has formed friendships with other peers,
she is now going out regularly with her friends and staff, recently going
to Legoland for a day, seeing a doctor for the first time in 2 years and
has had her first romance.
