STEP 2: CREATE PARTNERSHIPS WITH EXISTING
INTERNAL DIVERSITY TEAMS
Collaborate with your leadership team to identify the internal diversity
groups currently established within the organization.
Create a list that includes the name of each group, along with a designated
contact person, their email address, and phone number.
Divide the responsibilities among your leadership team to reach out to
these groups. Use the provided template for outreach.
Request permission to attend their meetings or meet with group
representatives and/or executive sponsors to discuss the concept of the
new ERG. This engagement will not only help share your ideas but also
facilitate valuable feedback and foster relationships.
In the event that the organization lacks existing internal diversity teams,
consider reaching out to other organizations with similar diversity and
inclusion goals. Establishing connections with external groups can provide
insights and support for your ERG initiative.
When attending these meetings, be sure to bring a list of questions to guide
the conversation and gather important information. Here are some
suggested questions to consider:
How was the group established?
Who did they reach out to initially and what approach did they use?
What steps were taken to seek approval for their formation?
What obstacles did they encounter during the process?
How were these obstacles managed or overcome?
When do they hold meetings and how frequently do they occur?
What are the typical agendas for their meetings?
What best practices have you implemented that have significantly
contributed to the success and growth of your group?
Can you recommend any resources (e.g., training materials, toolkits, or
online platforms) that have been particularly helpful for your initiatives?
Are there key performance indicators (KPIs) you use to measure the
effectiveness and impact of your group’s activities?
After the meeting, summarize and distribute the notes highlighting key
discussions and insights, then send a thank-you email to participants,
recapping the main points and any agreed-upon next steps.
