WILLSON HOUSE

The frame section at the rear of this
house was constructed first, around 1795,
and was bought by Samuel Willson, a
cabinet maker, who ran a chair factory
on the property. The brick portion of the
house was built later in the Federal-Greek
Revival style after a brickyard opened in
Ferrisburgh that supplied bricks for many
buildings in Vergennes. Samuel’s son,
William, became a portrait painter but his
promising art career was cut short. He
died at age 31. Margaret Foley, a famous
sculptor who hailed from Vergennes,
worked in this home before heading off
to Boston and eventually Italy to pursue
