14WILLSON HOUSE30 North StreetThe frame section at the rear of thishouse was constructed first, around 1795,and was bought by Samuel Willson, acabinet maker, who ran a chair factoryon the property. The brick portion of thehouse was built later in the Federal-GreekRevival style after a brickyard opened inFerrisburgh that supplied bricks for manybuildings in Vergennes. Samuel’s son,William, became a portrait painter but hispromising art career was cut short. Hedied at age 31. Margaret Foley, a famoussculptor who hailed from Vergennes,worked in this home before heading offto Boston and eventually Italy to pursueher art career. One of her sculptures,
