DE&I EMEA Year End Review 2023 - Flipbook - Page 12
Educating our people
Ensuring that we are educating every member of our
firm on the impact of bias and the importance of
inclusive leadership while empowering allyship is critical
so every one of our people feels they belong and can
contribute.
We rolled out interactional bias education sessions
in the region in 2023. These mandatory sessions help
our people understand the impact of interactional
bias, often called microaggressions, how to recognize
one’s own biases, and ways to interrupt interactional
bias when it occurs. These trainings are an important
part of our continuing education, recognising that each
member of our firm has a role to play in building an
inclusive workplace.
To promote a supportive, inclusive and safe working
culture for our LGBTQ+ colleagues and educate all
our people about the issues faced by the LGBTQ+
community, we regularly offer awareness training
across the region, most recently in Paris, Hamburg
and Berlin.
In Continental Europe, we trained our Pride+
network leaders and DEI team on the concept
of intersectionality. This concept is growing in
importance, in particular for employers working to
create inclusive workplaces, and will be part of our
future work in the region.
In the UK, partners and Business Services Leads
attended Upstander Leadership Workshops as a
recommendation arising out of the Flair Racial Equality
Action Plan. These bespoke workshops were designed
and facilitated by experts in building racially equitable
workplaces. It’s important to us that the partners
and leaders of our firm recognize both the direct and
indirect influence racial microaggressions have on our
culture and their important role in creating an inclusive
and equitable environment where micro-aggressions
are minimised and addressed.
We added Hemisphere as an online learning resource
for our people in the UK; it is a brain training platform
that reduces unconscious bias and improves racial
literacy, in an engaging way, through education and
storytelling. Created by Rare, multi-award-winning
experts in race equality, Hemisphere was developed
with experts in the fields of neuroscience, psychology,
and sociology. Following the training, participants
receive a series of short email prompts to reinforce
their learning. Following roll out in the UK, we are
exploring how to adapt this learning to share across
the EMEA region.
Inclusive communication is part of our DEI strategy
for the region and we offer regular training to all our
people. This year our training focused on LGBTQ+
terminology and using gender-inclusive language.
