Suggested activities (continued):
• Do activities with these, such as:
- Can pupils work out the meaning by looking at the picture and using their knowledge of the language(s)
they know?
- Can they guess the language by looking at images?
•
Invite pupils to list the languages they can see/use in various contexts. They can use page 5 of their Language
Passport to record them, and ask their family members for help once home
•
Tutor introduces other words from different languages that we normally also use in English and Irish, and English
and Irish words used in different languages. These can be types of food, objects and any other frequently used words
(do activities such as: matching, odd one out, true/false, sorting)
•
Discuss what strategies they used to guess the correct answers
•
Tutor asks pupils for the pronunciation of the words from the previous activity. Some pupils will give the correct
pronunciation for the languages they know, and the tutor will give the pronunciation of words in the language
they’re learning
•
Encourage pupils to reflect on the words as they see and hear them. Ask questions such as:
- Can you see different spellings or characters?
- Can you predict the sound of words by looking at their spelling?
- Are English/Irish words pronounced the same when used in other languages?
- Can you see similarities in some words across the languages that you know and are studying?
•
Ask pupils to record words on the relevant pages
6, 7 or 8 of their Language Passport
•
•
Before we finish:
