☐ Organize initial meetings to (1) communicate the responsibilities and
expectations for each leadership team member, including time
commitments, meeting frequency, and participation in initiatives, and (2) to
establish team dynamics and develop a collaborative environment.
Prepare a preliminary budget:
☐ Estimate the costs associated with the group's planned activities, training
sessions, events, and operational needs.
☐ Estimate the frequency of these activities.
☐ Use the provided template to create a preliminary budget.
Create a business case for the ERG:
☐ The business case should be in a document format that includes an
executive summary, problem statement, objectives, proposed solution,
benefits, budget, risks, implementation plan, and conclusion.
☐ Here’s a sample business case.
Secure executive sponsorship:
☐ Research potential sponsors who have roles or interests that align with
the ERG's mission.
☐ Create a prioritized list of executives.
☐ Schedule meetings to introduce the ERG and present the business case.
☐ Communicate what support you need from them, such as time,
resources, and/or advocacy, and make a direct request for their
commitment.
☐ Follow up with a thank-you note, meeting minutes, and any additional
information.
☐ Once sponsorship is secured, confirm the commitment with a formal
email or letter from the executive that outlines the agreed-upon support,
including resources, advocacy responsibilities, and specific commitments
(e.g., budget approvals, event attendance).
☐ Plan regular check-ins to keep the sponsor informed and engaged in the
ERG’s progress.
Share the group’s objectives with employees and management:
☐ Create and distribute a one-page informational sheet [view template],
including the ERG name and purpose, objectives, key initiatives (e.g.,
leadership workshops, networking events, volunteer opportunities), the
benefits of participation (e.g., professional growth, visibility within the
company, contribute to a positive organizational culture), a statement
saying that member enrollment is voluntary, a call to action to sign up for
the ERG, attend upcoming meetings or events, share the information with
others, and contact information for ERG leadership.
